Kerala Coconut Plant (Cocos nucifera) is a traditional and highly valued coconut palm associated with the tropical climate of Kerala. Known as “Kalpavriksham” or the Tree of Life, the coconut palm provides tender coconut water, edible kernel, coconut oil, coir and many useful products from different parts of the tree. This coconut plant is suitable for warm tropical conditions and can be grown in home gardens, farms and suitable large open spaces. Under favourable conditions and with proper care, improved coconut varieties can start bearing within about 6 years, while some improved varieties and hybrids may begin flowering even earlier. Kerala Agricultural University lists the Kera Sahasra coconut as starting to bear in the sixth year, while ICAR-CPCRI reports some improved varieties beginning flowering in 30–36 months.
